Automatic Smarthub updates

2024 · Futurehome

+35% users with updated software

Smarthub is a core of the Futurehome. The goal for the Automatic Smarthub updates project was to increase update adoption and reduce manual support interventions.

Around 50% of userbase was on 1+ year old software

User research revealed that many people:

  • Were not aware of the available updates and new features
  • Experienced bugs and a worse experience
  • Spent more time on the support
  • Prefer automatic over manual updates

Other challenges we faced:

  • We had to manually find and update beta testers
  • Updating too many people at the same time could cause bugs or any system instabilities
  • Support agents had to update software in around 60% of support cases

Updated flow gave users control while reducing support load

We worked to redesign the flow:

  • Built opt-in settings tailored to new and existing users
  • Redesigned the update system with two options: recommended and beta
  • Created in-app and push notifications to keep users informed
  • Added rollback options to reduce risk from unstable updates
