StrømKontroll: bridging hardware and software

StrømKontroll is a flagship product of Futurehome. Energy Management System that optimises your energy consumption based on all the components of your Norwegian electricity bill. For the past 3 years I’ve been working on polishing that system as well as delivering new key features.

Designing for the real world

I contributed to both user research and live installations, observing how our two main user groups — installers and end users — interacted with our hardware and software. These insights shaped everything from UX flows to error states and support communication.

The biggest challenge? Making the complexity of connected hardware feel invisible to the user — while ensuring the system remained robust and flexible in different home setups.

Cut Check-In Time by Half

One of the most impactful features we delivered were the ones for our new the provisioning and onboarding flow for our new electric vehicle (EV) charger. This required a deep understanding of the hardware’s capabilities and limitations — and then designing a UI that could guide users through setup with minimal friction or confusion.

What made this work unique

Designing for StrømKontroll wasn’t just about screens — it required a deep understanding of both the technical behaviour of our hardware and the real-world context of Norwegian energy consumption.

We had to bridge the gap between how energy systems work (grid operators, electricity providers, pricing models) and how end users think they work — often with limited knowledge of the system. I focused on creating UX and UI that supported users through complex decisions and setup processes without requiring them to understand the underlying technicalities.
